2016 Recap – Day 3

Steven James is up next.  By day Steven is a Kindergarten teacher however, when school is out, Mr. James travels the world and teaches amazing enameling classes.

Click here to visit his website to see what he is up to!

We were celebrating the release of his book (you can pick up here for only $14.66 on Amazon)

Apparently I didn’t take a single picture when Steven came to visit.  Perhaps because he lives in San Francisco and he feels more like a regular than a visiting instructor!

This is the class he taught.

and this one too…

We are looking forward to having Steven back again.

We have scheduled him to teach on Sunday, March 5 from 11pm-5pm.

He will teach his popular Celebration Charm Bracelet class. (click to register)

You will work on up to 31 designs in this all day workshop.  Use the charms in a home decor sort of way as a count down calendar or use them as a one-of-a-kind charm bracelet.

2016 Guest Teachers (so far)

I’ve started booking guest teachers for 2016.  We have many details up on the calendar already.  All are open for registration or Save the Date RSVP.  If there are no details on the link you can rsvp your interest in being informed as soon as we have the listing ready.

January 31

Steven James

Steven James, a refugee from one of the nation’s flyover states, now living in San Francisco spent his childhood breaking his art teacher’s rules – coloring outside the lines, peeling the wrapper off crayons and making glue skin in the palm of his hand.

Now that he is older, wiser and craftier he still wants to break the rules, but he needs you to join in the fun.  Put aside the responsibilities of your life and get back the creative connections you made as an 8-year old.  A full-time elementary school teacher, who has made appearances on the DIY and HGTV networks he loves taking a break from his own routine and spending a few hours with adults who will hopefully avoid picking noses, scabs or fights and focus on being as creative and inspired as possible.

His published work has appeared in magazines such as ReadyMade and BeadStyle and books from Lark and Kalmbach.  He has spread his love of handmade by developing craft ideas for TiVo, the Gap and the San Francisco Chronicle as well as various websites.

She teaches workshops and shows her work at various sites across the United States.

While we will be dyeing paper during the workshop, Leslie will talk about how the same process can be applied to dyeing fabric.

February 28/29

Donna Downey

Donna Downey is a bestselling author, instructor and all-around creative force. As a mixed-media artist, Donna is a born experimenter, blending and transforming both traditional and unexpected items into meaningful pieces of self expression. A former elementary school teacher, she has synthesized her first love of teaching with her passion for Art and brings this to women via workshops and events around the world. Donna is consistently on the leading edge of taking creative risks that push the creative envelope and empowering others to do the same with their art.

Originally from the Jersey shore, Donna lives and operates her Studio in North Carolina with her incredibly supportive husband and manager, and is a mother of three exceptionally blonde children, two chihuahuas and one beloved lemon beagle.

2/28/2016 – 2/29/2016
Metamorphasis with Donna Downey
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

As the title suggests, this workshop is about transformation, the literal transformation of the medias and surfaces as we work in layers, but also the adaptations you as the Artist will bring and incorporate into your own pieces. This workshop is about experimentation and discovery and although I will be guiding you through each layer, I encourage you to bring your own unique style to the process.

Using muslin fabric and canvas as your substrates, you will begin building structural layers by adding thin layers of joint compound and wet mediums giving your pages and art pieces a textural, sculpted feel. In class, I will work along with you modeling the processes and demonstrating how bendability, mark-making and color can play into your overall designs.

April 10/11

Mixed Media Dossier with Seth Apter
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

In this workshop you will create a personal dossier – a handmade, mixed media journal that you can use long after the workshop ends. Use it as a daily journal, a travel journal, a family scrapbook, or a theme-based diary for your interests, hobbies, or collections. During the workshop you will learn a variety of mixed media techniques for creating layers, texture, and dimension. A simple approach to binding will allow you to pull the entire project together and to add pages to your dossier at any point in the future. In the end, you will take home a one-of-a-kind and highly personal keepsake.
Photo Op with Seth Apter
6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

With the advent of smartphones and photo apps we have all quickly become expert photographers, sharing our images by email and across social networks. Join me in this workshop and relive the “good old days” when pictures were actually held in our hands and not stored in our phones. In Photo Op we will take ordinary photographs and turn them extraordinary through a series of hand-altered techniques. Using mixed media supplies such as paints, inks and markers that you bring, a few surprises that I will bring, and your creative imagination, you will take your photographs to the next level. Are you ready for your Photo Op?
Dimensional Stenciling with Seth Apter
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Stencils have never been more popular. They are the perfect supply to use in mixed-media art, altered art, art journaling, and so many other creative domains. They’re relatively inexpensive, simple to use, easy to store, and the perfect addition to many different art projects. This full-day workshop will show you how to create textured and dimensional effects using stencils. Following a brief review of non-dimensional stenciling techniques, you will be introduced to a series of products that can be used with stencils to create dimensional effects in your artwork. You will then choose your favorite approaches and supplies and use them to create stunning stenciled art.
