Naomi Haskell – Encaustic Painting Workshop:nh1
Encaustic uses wax, heat, and pigment to create a work of art or as a varnish. The term is derived from the Greek enkaustikos, to “burn in”. Encaustic refers to both the medium and the process. During this class we will discuss the equipemtn and tools required, managing the heating palete tempertaure and the various supports and materials you can use. I will show you how to use the medium, starting by prepping your board, applying the wax and paint, scraping to discover the layers of colorful wax, carving to define shapes, fun textures, taping for line and design and how to use various papers within this beautiful medium.
This is a three-hour class, with plenty of hands on practice for $66 (early registration), material included.

Encaustic is the most beautiful of all artists’ medium. Because of its nature, however, you have to be willing to relinquish some element of control. The wax has a mind of it’s own, we can only learn to guide and manipulate it.

Whether you’re just starting out with encaustic painting or have been painting with this medium for years, my hope is that you pass on what you have learned. As our collective knowledge of this exciting medium expands, we all become its gurus and heralds.

Junelle currently lives in a small town in Utah with her husband and is the mother of five brilliant children and shepherdess to sooo many lambs.

My Favorite Things- Junelle Jacobsen
10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

We try to make it extremely easy for you to walk in empty handed by providing access to the studio tools and supplies.  There is a small (optional) kit fee for those who need us to take care of the supply list for them so they don’t have to worry about a single thing.

You will be refreshed and encouraged after spending time with sweet Junelle.  She doesn’t make it to California very often since she spends a great portion of her year raising precious lambs in Utah.   You will want to make arrangements to come if at all possible.

For the past several years I’ve offered special deals for the first days of December.  Sort of my answer to the Black Friday, Small Business Sunday, Unknown Sunday and Cyber Monday shopping spree everyone just experienced.  I always felt I’d be lost amongt the flurry of sales and specials so I waited until December 1 to start my deals.  Each day for the next 16 days I’ll offer a “deal of the day” which will only be good for 24 hours.  I’m a bit late in posting today’s deal, so it will be good until 7pm(ish) PST on Friday, December 2nd.

Today’s deal is a customized One Word Canvas made just for you.

Here is the ETSY listing.  Use the code final1601 to get this canvas for only $16 (normally $26)

While the “deal price” is valid only for 24 hours (unless specified) the item may still be ordered at our regular price at any time.

All Things Soft & Gentle with Danielle Donaldson (day 2)

It was another amazing day learning from Danielle Donaldson

IMG_20160801_162429

Today we learned a bit about perspective drawing and watercolor illustration.

IMG_20160801_162505

The subject matter was my very favorite…

IMG_20160801_162543

..kittens!

IMG_20160801_162559

Such fun. It was a small class and still I didn’t take nearly as many photos as I should have because I was busy learning!

I can’t wait to sit with my supplies and play some more.

I was also  privileged to meet Danielle’s sidekick/class assistant/friend Marilyn who asked me to make her something out of the etched metal strip and leather cuffs we have in the shop.  A good reminder for us all don’t you think?

IMG_20160801_170507

It was a pure joy having Danielle (and Marilyn!) here for 2 days.  I can’t wait book her again so we can learn more from her.

IMG_20160801_171227

You can find more of Danielle here.

Her book is “Creative Girl” and can be found on her website or here in our shop ( I happen to have a nice stack of signed copies!)

“Be Still” with Danielle Donaldson – Day 1

“Be Still” with Danielle Donaldson – Day 1

One of my favorite part of having the studio is inviting amazing guest artists in to teach.  It is a huge perk to get to learn from my industry’s most inspiring artists.  I especially LOVE to have artist who have written a book that we’ve covered in our book club.  That is the case with Danielle Donaldson.  It is always great to spend time learning from an artist in person after learning from their book over a period of time.  (usually 7 weeks)

My great takeaway from today was the joy that is found in dirty watercolor water!  More on that later.

Now for some shots of today’s workshop.

It was a fantastic class and I can’t wait for tomorrow’s class.  (now officially “today’s” class since it is after midnight!)
