You will most certainly want to check out her website.

We had so much fun in class…so much so that I didn’t actually get any photos except this one of the two of us and Greyson the kitten.

New Book Clubs Starting

Standard

Summer is nearly over and just like that!  I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things with our weekly book club.

I get so many people asking “what is that book club thing I see on the calendar?”

Book Club at A Work of Heart is a way of practicing the exercises/projects in an art book (as opposed to just reading it)  Each week we cover another project.  All supplies are included in your class fee.

This fall, starting the week of August 24, we will cover 2 books concurrently.

I’m so in love with this latest book we are covering on Tuesday mornings.  I feel like these will be  some long lasting workshops even after book club is over…especially today’s drippy flowers!

One More Book Club for Fall

Standard

Flowers are organic, wonderfully forgiving subjects. Each one is unique; you can’t paint one wrong! Painted Blossoms will encourage you to welcome creativity with ease as you discover ways to tend the garden within. In addition to watching yourself grow through seven different stepped-out flower projects, you’ll learn basic design elements, how to get unstuck from the mud, how to carve your own stamps, cut your own stencils and more.

Back by Popular Demand

Standard

Book Club is incredibly popular at A Work of Heart.  We all love to buy the latest and greatest released art book but do we ever actually create the art that is featured in these books?  That is what our Book Club is all about…not just enjoying the inspiration but actually creating using the inspiring art as a spring board.  It is the next best thing to taking a class with the actual artist/author.

Our all time favorite book that we’ve covered in Book Club has been “Art Journal Freedom” by Dina Wakley.  Due to popular demand, we are repeating the book again for a record breaking THIRD time!  Thursday mornings from 10am-12pm starting March 5th.

Art Journal Color! Art Journal Composition! Art Journal Freedom!

Color is all around us and we often find ourselves drawn to particular combinations or arrangements. But how can you effectively and artistically capture those eye-catching compositions in your art journal?

It’s true, art journaling has no “rules” and is a safe place for free expression of your one-of-a-kind life. But knowledge is power and knowing the “rules” of color and composition gives you the freedom to use and break them willfully to create the effects you want. Dina shares these principles in a fun and approachable way with dozens upon dozens of unique journal pages to show you just some of the many possibilities.

Inside You Will Find:

  • Lessons and tips about composition and color including dominance and repetition, symmetry, contrast and the power of black and white.
  • 10 step-by-step technique demonstrations.
  • Dozens of color and design tips and page challenges.

***************************************************

We will cover this entire book in 7 sessions meeting Thursday mornings from 10am-12pm starting  March 5.

Week 1: Symetry & Asymetry (March 5)
Week 2: White Space, Continuance & Closure (March 12)
Week 3: Proximity (March 19)
Week 4: Dominance & Repetition (March 26)
Week 5: Color Basics & Contrast with Color (April 2)
Week 6: Color as a Composition Tool (April 9)
Week 7: The Power of Black & White (April 16)

Click here to sign up for all 7 sessions (at a 10% discount from individual session pricing)…scroll down to the bottom of the page.

Calendar Journal Workshop & New Bookclub

Standard

2 things coming up in the studio that I don’t want you to miss.

First off is my version of the “Documented Life” journal.

This is your chance to come and make one for yourself.  As we begin a new year you might have goals/intentions for the months ahead like I do.

There are many weekly prompts you can sign up to get like this or this or this.  While I could use a pre-made journal, last year I found it was much more enjoyable to work in these little monthly pamphlets and bind them together at the end of the year into this full chunky 1 year journal.

Sign up here to join us for a full day workshop prepping 12 monthly books in such a way that all you have to do is add your weekly thoughts/photos/challenges/lists.  At the end of the year you will have a treasure.

Next…It is time for book club to start up again.

We are thrilled that Dina Wakely‘s new book is here.  We are starting up next Tuesday (January 13) with 2 sessions each week to pick from.  Mornings from 10-12 or evenings from 6:30-8:30.  You can sign up for individual weeks or the whole 7 week series.  If you are doing the whole week we will get you signed up on the first day.

Hope to see you in the studio soon!

Book Club – Paint Mojo (Sept/Oct)

Standard

New start dates are Tuesday, September 2nd (10am-12pm) OR Thursday, September 4th (6:30pm-8:30pm)

Here are the first 3 lessons I’ve completed on 12″x18″ watercolor paper.

I will be breaking the 8 week series up into individual sessions sometime over this weekend so if you want to get the discounted price ($25 per session) sign up sooner rather than later.  Price goes up to $30 per session on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Some frequently asked questions:

Q:What if I can’t make it to all the sessions?
A:  You have the option of coming to EITHER Tuesday morning OR Thursday evening in any given week.  Should you sign up for the whole series and know in advance  that you will be missing a session, arrangements can be made for you to have studio time (non-instruction time) and have access to the supplies and book for reference so you can make up the lesson(s) you missed.

Q: Do I have to bring anything?
A: Just yourself and optionally a journal.  We will be providing watercolor paper for all of the lessons.  If you would like to work on a canvas instead, you may bring that(or purchase one here).  All paints & mediums are provided as part of your class fee.

Q: My babysitter just bailed on me, can I bring my child to class?
A: As much as we love kids, this is an adult class.  We try to be accommodating with last minute emergencies but please try to have a backup plan.  You may always ask for studio time make-up in case of a last minute emergency.

Q: I’m only interested in a few of the lessons, can I pick and choose which classes I’ll attend?
A:  Yes!  On the first day of the book club(or maybe even a couple of days before), all the classes will be individually listed for the remaining 8 weeks.  Note that the first class is already listed individually so you can sign up for a “try it” session to see if you are interested in the whole series.

Q:  I’m a total beginner, is this appropriate for me?
A:  YES!  Book Club is a great place to start.  I encourage every level of experienced individual to join us but especially beginners.

Q: Do I have to own the book to attend?
A: While it is helpful and encouraged it is not required.  We have the book in the shop and you are welcome to share the teacher’s copy as it is available.

Q: What do I do with the artwork I make in book club (Believe me..this question IS asked)
A: This session we will be working on Watercolor Paper and I will devote some time showing you how to bind all 8 lesions up into a 9×12 book.

Q:  What if I can’t pay the whole $200 up front?  Can I make payments?
A: Absolutely.  If you want to commit to the whole 8 weeks we can break the 200 up into 3 payments of $67 (final payment is $66)

Hopefully that answers all your questions and you are ready to sign up!  We look forward to another fun and inspirational session with you.
